Call for Students

I am looking for students interested in joining my research program on rural livelihoods in the Peruvian Amazon. The program is divided into three projects that aim to understand: (1) livelihood responses to floods and river dynamics; (2) rural livelihoods and socioeconomic change and (3) social networks, rural life and livelihoods. Inquiries from motivated students with a suitable academic background, an interest in field-based work, working knowledge of Spanish and prior research/travel experience in Latin America are strongly encouraged. Students will be expected to seek additional external funding opportunities. Individuals with a broader interest on cultural/political ecology, rural livelihoods and their prospects for conservation and development, poverty alleviation and adaptation to environmental change in Latin America should also feel free to contact me. Please include a brief research statement, cv, and transcripts.

:
  • Holocene fluvial and glacial landscape reconstruction using sedimentary archives
  • Reconstruction of extreme events
  • Urbanization impacts on stream erosion
  • River geoarchaeology

The influence of rivers, glaciers and humans on landform development in the northern hemisphere, mainly in the mountain areas of Canada, Greenland and Iceland with emphasis on B.C., the southern Yukon and southern Ontario.

My special interests are the influence of climate change and human disturbance on geomorphic processes and landform change with an emphasis on river floodplains and sediment yield in glacierized landscapes. Contemporary and Holocene glacier fluctuations have been reconstructed using terrestrial and high-resolution glaciolacustrine and glaciomarine sedimentary archives. I have conducted research mainly in large glacier-fed lakes of the western Canadian Cordillera and, in collaboration with colleagues at the University of Copenhagen, deep fiords of western Greenland. More recent work has focussed on late Quaternary and Holocene fluvial environments of southern Ontario with particular emphasis on decoupling the influence of humans disturbance on erosion from that associated with climate-induced changes. Geophysical, geochronology and geoarchaeology methods have been used extensively to develop and interpret the sedimentary record.

Looking for: MSc, PhD students
I am looking for highly motivated MSc and PhD students interested in hydrology and biogeochemistry, particularly in urban or urbanizing environments. Our research group is primarily field-based, working in streams and wetlands to study water-soil-plant interactions and the nutrient transformations as a result of those interactions. Research topics for incoming students include new projects on groundwater-surface water interactions and nutrient cycling in suburbanizing streams, analysis of changing stream discharge and precipitation trends, and existing projects on stormwater management pond hydrology and biogeochemistry.

Research Interests
:
  • My research mobilizes social and political theory and political economic approaches to understand:
  • (1) the production of different environmental landscapes, and
  • (2), the’ identities’ of the people that produce environmental spaces and their social positioning in the production process.

1)  What are the cultural, political and economic relations that produce resource landscapes?  I am interested in how specific subjects, defined by relations of gender, sexuality, class and ‘race’, are made in conjunction with the production of different social and environmental landscapes.  Here, I engage with debates on the production of nature and social difference to argue for a wider understanding of how specific social groups are enrolled in the labour of making natures.  I examine these questions through two concrete research projects including: (1) my doctoral research that examined the cultures of labour in the British Columbia tree planting industry, (2) my current research that develops the concept of ‘socio-ecological fixes’ through a conceptual engagement with David Harvey’s work and an investigation of the intersection of urban unemployment and forestry relief projects in British Columbia during the 1930s depression.

2)  What might an engagement with Antonio Gramsci’s work mean for contemporary debates in geography and environmental studies?  Despite his formidable presence in many disciplines, Gramsci has been conspicuously absent in debates in geography and environmental studies.  I am interested in whether Gramsci’s work can enhance our understandings of environmental politics and questions of labour and unemployment.  In addition, I have co-edited a collection titled Gramsci; Space, Nature and Politics, with Gillian Hart, Stefan Kipfer and Alex Loftus, which addresses Gramsci’s relevance to debates on geography, political ecology, ‘the political’ and difference.

I am interested in how debates in political ecology, agrarian studies and social theory can help in understanding the making and contestation of different environmental landscapes. My research focuses on the political economy of alternative agriculture and labour, financial investments in land and forests and the work of Antonio Gramsci. I welcome inquiries from students interested in any of these areas, broadly conceived, and who are keen to blend substantive qualitative and ethnographic research with different theoretical debates.

Call for Students

I am seeking one PhD student with interests in Quaternary science, paleoclimatology and paleoecology to further develop our group’s investigations of sub-till organic deposits of Pleistocene age in Northern Ontario and Northern Manitoba. These deposits provide important archives of Pleistocene interglacial and interstadial environments and we are using them to better understand ice sheet dynamics, climate forcing, peatland dynamics and carbon cycling through the Quaternary ice ages. Applicants must have an MSc in Quaternary science (or related discipline) with expertise in geochronology, Quaternary stratigraphy, Quaternary paleoclimate, and/or proxy-based reconstructions using pollen or other microfossils. The incumbent must also be comfortable with field work in remote regions, lab work for sediment processing, and be willing to learn skills for quantitative analyses of resulting datasets using multivariate and spatial statistics.

My current research revolves around issues related to citizenship, borders, security, economy, nation-states and globalization. I am particularly interested in the ways that North American geopolitical relations are being reshaped, and how the idea of risk—both economic and social—has been used to discipline behaviour and promote new forms of citizenship. This work also considers the securitization of the region, with a focus on changing border practices and policies. Another aspect of my research addresses the social, cultural and political dimensions of money, from the cultural values inscribed on national currencies, to the proposals for a North American Monetary Union, to general theories of money and exchange. While much of the above work interrogates the concept of the nation-state, I also continue to be fascinated by visual and literary representations, and have examined urban and wilderness narratives with a special emphasis on Canadian national identity and belonging.

I welcome applications from students working in the areas of education, health, gender, race, addiction, and development. My own work uses historical-ethnographical methods to explore the political economy of everyday life. My central concern is with how intimate politics—acts embedded in sexuality, friendship, families, and other bonds—are shaped by and shaping social and spatial inequalities. I have worked on education, HIV/AIDS, and sexuality, and am beginning a SSHRC-funded project on heroin addiction. For more information please visit my website.

I welcome motivated graduate students interested in physical geography, biogeochemistry and environmental science. My research uses ecosystem-scale field studies, controlled experiments, and emerging analytical techniques to understand how contaminants and climate change impact aquatic ecosystems, particularly in the Canadian Arctic and boreal ecoregions. Current and potential projects include: i) reconstructing long-term trends in atmospheric mercury concentrations and emissions using tree-rings, ice cores and lake sediment cores; ii) quantifying ecosystem metabolism (primary production and respiration) in ice-covered Arctic lakes; iii) impacts of climate change on mercury cycling and methylmercury production in Arctic ecosystems; and iv) climate change impacts on lake and watershed biogeochemistry (carbon and nutrient cycling) in northern regions.

I am interested in how transportation within cities shapes, and is shaped by, the conduct of ordinary life (the life of production and the life of the family) in general, and the pursuit of the good life in particular. I welcome students interested in urban transportation who focus on (1) purposeful activity of individuals and organizations (e.g, households and firms) either in pursuit of the good life and other objectives or on (2) coping with transportation not well suited to them. I also welcome students interested in the design of transportation systems that might better enable ordinary life and the “good life”.

Call for Students

I am recruiting MA and PhD students for a new research project on alternative approaches to ecological restoration. The project entitled, “Ecologies of Care: Forest Landscape Restoration in India” examines social and ecological outcomes of state-led afforestation programs in India and ongoing community-based and citizen-led approaches to ecological nurturance. While, my ideal student would be someone who is already embedded in activist-academic networks on Indigenous rights and environmental justice in India, I am equally enthusiastic about working with students who wish to explore decolonization of nature-people relations, alternatives to neoliberal conservation, revival of the commons, ecological care and affective ecologies in other parts of the world.

Call for Students

I welcome PhD in Planning applicants interested in three broad areas:

  • The role that politics, planning and policy play in conditioning the viability of alternative economic forms at multiple spatial scales, from the city-region to the transnational, across the Global North. These community-oriented, social and solidarity economy alternatives may include enterprise models such as cooperatives, industrial foundations, special purpose trusts (e.g. data trusts, land trusts) and innovative non-hierarchical or non-profit networked forms in the high-tech sector.
  • Political implications of rising inter-urban/regional economic inequality, polarization, and populism in rich democracies.
  • Links between community development, economic development, and sexual and gender diversity.

Call for Students

Prof. Wells is seeking a Masters student for a project on the physical limnology of Lake Simcoe. The project will investigate the dissolved oxygen dynamics in waters of Lake Simcoe, specifically how physical mixing processes determine the levels of dissolved oxygen that are important for viable fish habitats. As the project will involve significant analysis of new field data, the student should ideally have a strong quantitive background and knowledge of limnology or oceanography.
