Contact InformationJoint Appointment with School of the Environment Home Campus:U of T St. George Call for StudentsI am looking for students interested in joining my research program on rural livelihoods, poverty and environment in the Peruvian Amazon. This program seeks to understand how rural peoples make a living within the context of environmental and socioeconomic change, and to explain the spatial and social distribution of poverty. Possible themes include: river dynamics and livelihoods; greater access to affordable motors and cell phones and their implications for labor, marketing and finance; covid-19; social networks (e.g., religion, sports, kinship), livelihoods and resilience; small Amazonian towns and their role in the regional economy; floodplain agriculture and/or fisheries. Inquiries from motivated students with a suitable academic background, an interest in field-based work, Spanish proficiency and prior research/travel experience in Latin America are strongly encouraged, as are students with experience with field experiments or social networks. Students will be expected to seek additional external funding opportunities. Individuals with a broader interest on cultural/political ecology, rural livelihoods in Latin America should also feel free to contact me. Please include a brief research statement, cv, and transcripts. For more details see the Peruvian Amazon Rural Livelihoods (PARLAP) site at: https://parlap.geog.mcgill.ca/

Interregional Inequality and Regional Development: Quickly increasing inequality causes concern and drives populism. This research hypothesizes that regional development depends on the ability to mobilize resources and networks across different spatial scales. II. Knowledge Generation over Distance: This research is based on the assumption that the competitiveness of firms depends on their ability to engage in creating and circulating knowledge both within and beyond their regional environment. III. Cluster Evolution and Institutional Change: This research is interested in (i) processes of how clusters emerge, (ii) the consequences of institutional change for cluster dynamics, (iii) the impact of cross-cluster networks.

Shiri M. Breznitz, an economic geographer, specializes in innovation, technology commercialization, and regional economic development. She is also a member of the Advisory Board of Monash University’s Better Governance and Policy research focus area and the Ontario IP implementation panel. Her research is at the critical intersection of theory and policy to fit the new realities of globalization: Professor Breznitz’s work has informed policymaking at the local, national, and international levels. She has advised on the role of universities in the larger story of innovation, on the economic impact of biotechnology and Intellectual Property, and on the role of clusters in driving innovation. Her current projects include a study on the economic impact of entrepreneurship education, the impact of gender and work experience on entrepreneurship, the geography of crowdfunding, and a study on the Greater Toronto ecosystems of innovation. Professor Breznitz’s book, “The Fountain of Knowledge” with Stanford University Press (July 2014), analyzes universities’ relationships with government and industry, focusing on the biotechnology industry as a case study. She has also co-edited the book, “University Technology Transfer: The Globalization of Academic Innovation,” with Routledge Press (September 2015). Professor Breznitz was a member of the Ontario Expert Panel on Intellectual Property and, in 2018, was a Co-PI on the University of Toronto Alumni Impact Survey. | View Complete Profile:Including degrees, research interests, publications and more. |

The influence of rivers, glaciers and humans on landform development in the northern hemisphere, mainly in the mountain areas of Canada, Greenland and Iceland with emphasis on B.C., the southern Yukon and southern Ontario. My special interests are the influence of climate change and human disturbance on geomorphic processes and landform change with an emphasis on river floodplains and sediment yield in glacierized landscapes. Contemporary and Holocene glacier fluctuations have been reconstructed using terrestrial and high-resolution glaciolacustrine and glaciomarine sedimentary archives. I have conducted research mainly in large glacier-fed lakes of the western Canadian Cordillera and, in collaboration with colleagues at the University of Copenhagen, deep fiords of western Greenland. More recent work has focussed on late Quaternary and Holocene fluvial environments of southern Ontario with particular emphasis on decoupling the influence of humans disturbance on erosion from that associated with climate-induced changes. Geophysical, geochronology and geoarchaeology methods have been used extensively to develop and interpret the sedimentary record. | View Complete Profile:Including degrees, research interests, publications and more. |

1) What are the cultural, political and economic relations that produce resource landscapes? I am interested in how specific subjects, defined by relations of gender, sexuality, class and ‘race’, are made in conjunction with the production of different social and environmental landscapes. Here, I engage with debates on the production of nature and social difference to argue for a wider understanding of how specific social groups are enrolled in the labour of making natures. I examine these questions through two concrete research projects including: (1) my doctoral research that examined the cultures of labour in the British Columbia tree planting industry, (2) my current research that develops the concept of ‘socio-ecological fixes’ through a conceptual engagement with David Harvey’s work and an investigation of the intersection of urban unemployment and forestry relief projects in British Columbia during the 1930s depression. 2) What might an engagement with Antonio Gramsci’s work mean for contemporary debates in geography and environmental studies? Despite his formidable presence in many disciplines, Gramsci has been conspicuously absent in debates in geography and environmental studies. I am interested in whether Gramsci’s work can enhance our understandings of environmental politics and questions of labour and unemployment. In addition, I have co-edited a collection titled Gramsci; Space, Nature and Politics, with Gillian Hart, Stefan Kipfer and Alex Loftus, which addresses Gramsci’s relevance to debates on geography, political ecology, ‘the political’ and difference. | View Complete Profile:Including degrees, research interests, publications and more. |

My current research revolves around issues related to citizenship, borders, security, economy, nation-states and globalization. I am particularly interested in the ways that North American geopolitical relations are being reshaped, and how the idea of risk—both economic and social—has been used to discipline behaviour and promote new forms of citizenship. This work also considers the securitization of the region, with a focus on changing border practices and policies. Another aspect of my research addresses the social, cultural and political dimensions of money, from the cultural values inscribed on national currencies, to the proposals for a North American Monetary Union, to general theories of money and exchange. While much of the above work interrogates the concept of the nation-state, I also continue to be fascinated by visual and literary representations, and have examined urban and wilderness narratives with a special emphasis on Canadian national identity and belonging. | View Complete Profile:Including degrees, research interests, publications and more. |

In the area of forest ecology, graduate research will be related to better understanding: i) how and why wood traits (e.g., wood density, wood chemical composition) differ among and within tree species, and ii) the role this variation plays in governing forest ecosystem functions including carbon (C) storage and cycling. In the area of agroecology, graduate research projects will be designed to evaluate: i) how leaf functional traits (e.g., photosynthesis, leaf chemistry) differ among and within crops; ii) the role this variation plays in governing agroecosystem functions such as soil C dynamics; and iii) the role this variation plays in governing crop responses to environmental change such as extreme temperature events.
