Graduate Student Registration Instructions

Registration for the 2020-21 academic year is open as of July 20. Registration is usually triggered by either a fees payment, or a Request for Fee Deferral. Please note registration is a separate process from course enrolment (course enrolment, which opens July 30, does not trigger registration).

Please read through to determine your correct path to registration, depending on your status.

  6. Deadlines

1. Students in the Funded Cohort (Year 1 MA/MSc Geography, Year 1-4 PhD)

Students who are in year 1 MA/MSc Geography or years 1-4 PhD have a funding guarantee from the university which covers the cost of their fees. These students are in the funded cohort. Students in the funded cohort will have their fees paid automatically with awards/scholarships during the academic year (with some exceptions, e.g. you are receiving a grant/award paid by an external agency which is not paid through U of T). Because tuition payments will be paid later via awards, you can register online using ACORN by requesting a Fees Deferral. For incoming students, you will not be able to register until all conditions of your offer of admission have been cleared (e.g. completion of prior degree, transcripts, etc.) – please review your admission letter for details.

To register online with a Fees Deferral, log in to ACORN and click on “Tuition Fee Deferral” in the Finances tab.

2. Students outside the Funded Cohort with Scholarships/Awards/TA

Students who are not in the funded cohort (MA/MSc Geography students year 2+, PhD students years 5+ and all MSc Planning students) are usually expected to pay fees to register. In some cases, these students may also be eligible for a “Fees Deferral” if they are receiving funding which runs through U of T (e.g. scholarships and awards, TA positions). This funding must cover the “minimum payment to register” which is noted on your invoice.

To register with a Fees Deferral, students must complete the Register Without Payment (Fee Deferral) form, attach proof of funding, and submit it to the Graduate Advisor in the department (MSc Planning, send the form to Marija Wright. All other students send the form to Jessica Finlayson).

Students who have registered with a Fees Deferral have until April 30 to pay their fees, without service charges. After April 30 service charges are accrued at a rate of 1.5% compounded (19.56% per annum).

3. Students Outside the Funded Cohort Who Need Additional Time to Complete their Degree Due to COVID-19 Delays in Progress (1-session Fee Waiver)

Research-stream and professional degree students who demonstrate that their academic progress was significantly impeded due to COVID-19 related disruptions, and who now require additional time to complete their degree program, may be exempt from tuition for up to one academic session. Students still will be charged non-tuition ancillary, incidental fees and system access fees that are associated with the registration session. See the SGS webpage for further information.

To request registration and the one-session tuition waiver, complete the Register With Tuition Exemption on Basis of Progress Delays due to COVID-19 form (including your supervisor’s signature, if applicable) and submit it to the Graduate Advisor in the department (MSc Planning, send the form to Marija Wright. All other students send the form to Jessica Finlayson).

4. Students Outside the Funded Cohort with OSAP

Students who are assessed to receive OSAP can also register online in ACORN with a Fees Deferral. To register online with a Fees Deferral, log in to ACORN and click on “Tuition Fee Deferral” in the Finances tab (see graphic above).

5. Students Outside the Funded Cohort without Awards/OSAP/Funding

Students who are not in the funded cohort, and who do not hold awards/funding/tuition waiver, must make a fees payment. Fee payments can be made through most banks and in person at a bank machine, by telephone or online. See the Student Accounts website for fee payment instructions.

The minimum payment required is noted on your invoice. The deadline to pay residual fall fees is September 30 – monthly service charges will accrue on unpaid fall fees as of October 15.  The deadline to pay residual winter fees is November 30 – monthly service charges will accrue on the unpaid balance as of December 15 (or February 15 if receiving OSAP/government loans).

Service charges are accrued at a rate of 1.5% compounded (19.56% per annum).
