Undergraduate Geography Internship Course – Application Deadline June 3, 2014
This course is intended for students entering the final year of their undergraduate program. It is a full credit course that runs from September to April. Applications are due by 5pm on June 3, 2014, and can be dropped off at the Department of Geography, or submitted by email to firstname.lastname@example.org. Students selected for an interview will be notified by the second or third week of June.
This course is designed to give you a work experience related to the various subfields of Geography, such as urban planning, environment, GIS, etc. It provides an opportunity for you to determine your career goals and to develop networks and skills to help you succeed in the workplace. We try to match your interests with a placement. However, there are no guarantees about the type of placement you will receive.
The placement will involve working one day a week through most of the school year. You need to be available for the placement one eight hour day or two half days a week, depending on employer. You will be responsible for getting to the workplace. Placements may or may not be downtown, and some commuting may be required. You will not be paid for this work. However, you will have complete safety insurance coverage for the time you spend at your placement, and will receive academic credit. It is important that you conduct yourself in a professional manner at all times.
The class will also meet a number of times throughout the academic year (approximately 8-10 times). Some class meetings will be organizational. We will have workshops on different careers in geography, how to write a resume, and other professional development topics. We will also have discussions and readings related to the broader themes of internships and the workplace. There will be a number of written assignments, such as a journal of your work experience and an essay on a topic related to your internship.
