INTERSECTIONS: Transformation of Values to Sustainability: Exploring Values in Society, Professional Planning and First Nations – John Curry Bousfield Distinguished Visiting Scholar – Friday, November 10, 2017

November 10, 2017 @ 3:00 pm - 5:00 pm

Values are principles or standards which humans develop from early childhood and ultimately help mould our actions, opinions and decisions. The purpose of this presentation is to explore how values are changing as society moves towards a sustainable future. A review of values will take place with societal values and then Isreal Stollman’s 1979 planning values, followed by John Friedmann’s 1993 professional values, and concluding with the current Ontario Professional Planner’s Institute Statement of Values. First Nations embrace a set of values and beliefs with a commitment to tradition, heritage and culture; sharing in group recognition rather than individual rewards. Despite significant pressures from the dominant culture, First Nations have demonstrated a high level of tenacity in maintaining traditional values & beliefs. Value systems of tribes in Alaska/BC (Haida & Athabascan), and if time permits other First Nation communities, will contribute to the development of a value set which can move the sustainability agenda forward.
